Toyota has announced a $1.3bn investment at its flagship US Kentucky factory for future electrification including assembly of a new, three row battery electric SUV for US sale.

The project brings the plant’s total investment to around US$10bn.

The investment “supports” previously announced future BEV assembly at the complex and adds a battery pack assembly line using batteries supplied by Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina.

The Kentucky plant opened in 1986 and now employs 9,400 people.

“The announcement reflects our commitment to vehicle electrification and further reinvesting in our US operations,” said Kerry Creech, president of Toyota Kentucky.

Since 2021, Toyota has announced new investments totaling $17bn into its US manufacturing operations to support electrification.
