Aston Martin

Developed especially for China, AML claims, the DBX Mild Hybrid is a world premiere for Auto Guangzhou. This has the same powertrain as the Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+. That means M 256, which is a 2,999cc in-line six-cylinder petrol engine. This produces 320 kW (435 hp) and 520 Nm. To this are added 16 kW (22 hp) and 250 Nm from a motor, this ISG boost system adding the additional power and torque for up to three seconds. Drive goes to both axles via a nine-speed gearbox.

Audi

As well as facelifts for the A8, S8 and their L derivatives, an extra long variant intended to be a rival for the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is added, reviving one of the marques which made up Auto Union. The new A8 L Horch is powered by a 250 kW (340 PS) version of the Volkswagen Group’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 with 48-volt electrics.

The Q5 e-tron also premiered at Auto Guangzhou, this EV being a special model for China manufactured by SAIC Volkswagen. Audi revealed the Concept Shanghai at the Shanghai motor show in April, that vehicle being a preview of the seven-seat SUV. Both length (4,876 mm) and wheelbase (2,965) are identical to SAIC Volkswagen’s VW ID.6 X.

SAIC General Motors revealed the Buick GL8 Flagship Concept. This should offer an outline of the next generation of the big MPV/minivan.

Buick’s other concept for Auto Guangzhou is called Smart Pod, which “will introduce the brand’s bold new vision for future hub-to-hub luxury travel”.

BYD

The Destroyer 05 is a 4,780 mm long plug-in hybrid sedan. Formerly expected to be called Seal, the new model will be on sale in 2022 powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a single motor.

This car will reportedly be the first for BYD’s so-called Warship series. Certain future SUVs will be part of a ‘Cruiser’ model series with ‘Landing Ship’ reserved for MPVs.

Chery

Chery Auto revealed an SUV called Omoda 5, formerly known only by a code, X-C. One distinguishing feature is a giant grille which also almost hides what are especially slim headlights. No powertrain details have been announced for this model which is expected to be launched in China by mid-2022.

Chevrolet

The Menlo hasn’t been too successful for GM China so perhaps a new battery and motor will improve things. The 52.5 kWh pack and 110 kW motor which had been standard at the time of market launch in February 2020 are now replaced: the ‘2022 Menlo‘ receives a 61.1 kWh ternary lithium battery pack and a 130 kW motor.

Ford

A new generation Mondeo debuts. This shares much with the Evos, including a platform, a production plant and a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. The new Lincoln Zephyr is also closely related to the Mondeo and Evos.

The Equator Sport is another world premiere for the brand. A special SUV for China and part of the JMC-Ford joint venture, it is shorter than the Equator, dimensions being 4,630/1,935/1,706 and 2,726 mm (length/width/height/wheelbase). Equivalents for the Equator are 4,905/1,930/1,755 and 2,865. The standard engine is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo.

GAC

The new Aion LX Plus is a modified version of the Aion LX, with some minor exterior changes. The big news is a 144 kWh battery, giving the Plus an official range of 1,008 km as rated by CLTC (China light-duty vehicle test cycle). The top version’s motors’ power is quoted as a combined 540 kW, there is a two-speed transmission and three RoboSense-supplied LiDAR. GAC quotes the 0-100 km/h time as 2.9 seconds. Less expensive variants with a 180 kW motor are also part of the planned line-up.

Another show premiere for GAC is the second generation Trumpchi GS8. The length is 4,980 mm compared to 4,835 for the original. Both six- and seven-seat layouts are available and two powertrain choices: a 2.0-litre turbo with a 2.0-litre turbo hybrid to follow. The petrol-electric one is said to use Toyota technology (GAC and TMC have a JV).

GAC also showed the Trumpchi Vision Emkoo Concept for the first time, this being a pure design study. It had covered wheels, a single seat for the driver and a bench for those in the back.

Genesis

The Hyundai luxury division is calling its electric GV70 both the ‘Electrified GV70’ and ‘the electric model of the GV70’. The new SUV is nearly identical to the petrol and diesel GV70, save for the charging port and a rear skid plate which is no longer shaped to accommodate tailpipes. AWD is standard and there are two motors, each producing 160 kW and 350 Nm. Maximum power and torque are 360 kW (in Boost Mode) and 700 Nm.

Haval

The XY concept’s premiere at Auto Shanghai earlier in 2021 was a preview of the Shenshou. Great Wall Motor claims the name translates as ‘mythical beast’. This 4,780 mm long five-seat SUV Coupe offers buyers a choice of 1.5- or 2.0-litre turbo engines, each linked to a seven-speed DCT. A 1.5-litre hybrid as well as a 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid are believed to be coming in 2022.

Honda

Different to the Acura Integra (although they share much),  a hatchback for North America, the new Honda Integra is the Civic sedan with a different name and a few exterior differences. In China the Dongfeng Honda JV builds the Civic whereas the Integra – offically announced in October – is part of the Guangqi Honda joint venture.

Also back in October, Honda stated that it would be launching multiple electric models under a new name: e:N Series. The e:N Coupe Concept was displayed in public for the first time at the Wuhan motor show in October with the e:N SUV Concept revealed for the first time in public at Auto Guangzhou.

Hozon Auto

The Neta S is an electric sedan which Hozon Auto (also known as Hezhong Qiche) had previously heralded with the Eureka 3. That concept was a world premiere at the Beijing motor show in September 2020.

The production model will be offered with a choice of range: up to 800 or 1,000 km according to CLTC. Hozon Auto sees the 4,808 mm long Neta S competing with the Tesla Model 3 and other EVs around that size when it arrives in late 2022.

Hycan

The Hycan brand, formerly, a JV between GAC and Nio but now controlled by the former, brought two electric prototypes to Auto Guangzhou. These were the Concept-S, a low-slung sedan and the Concept-M, an MPV.

IM Motor

Zhiji Motor, an electric vehicles start-up, revealed prototypes of what were promised to be the first two of five vehicles at a special event in January. This was also when the name, IM (‘Intelligence In Motion’ was stated for the first time). The first sedan, the 5.1 m long L7, premiered at Auto Shanghai in April with the first SUV, the LS7, now following at the Guangzhou show.

Lincoln

The production version of the Zephyr concept was revealed. This 4.9 m long sedan will be built in Chongqing by Changan Ford and like the closely related Ford Mondeo, limited mainly to the PRC. Sales are due to commence in early 2022 and there is just the one engine, a non-electrified 2.0-litre turbo, sending drive to the front axle via an eight-speed transmission.

Maxus

The MIFA 9 is an electric MPV which also borrows the name of an SAIC architecture (Maxus Intelligent Flexible Architecture). The production model is closely related to the MIFA concept which premiered at the Shanghai motor show in April.

MIFA the platform is for front-, rear- and all-wheel drive vehicles. The company also claims it can accommodate unibody and body-on-frame designs. The MIFA 9 is front-wheel drive and powered by a single motor with stated outputs of 180 kW and 350 Nm. The ternary lithium battery gives a stated range of up to 520 km (CLTC).

Maxus’ other debutante was the fantastically named Bull Demon King. This more rugged version of the T90 pick-up has a blacked out grille, raised suspension and chunky wheel arch extensions in the style of the Ranger Raptor. Having been revealed as a prototype at the Chengdu motor show in September, this is a slightly modified series production version. The engine is SAIC’s 160 kW and 500 Nm 2.0-litre diesel.

Mitsubishi Motors

The Airtrek name has been revived for an electric SUV. Revealed as a prototype at the Shanghai motor show in April, the company said then that the model would be manufactured by the GMMC (GAC Mitsubishi Motors) joint venture. The 4,600 mm long production version – exhibited at Auto Guangzhou for the first time – has a 70 kWh battery. GAC’s Aion V Plus is believed to be the basis of this model. Sales begin in 2022.

Pao/Poer

Great Wall Motor’s Pao (also known as Poer) division revealed a concept called Supercar Pickup. This was the P-Series/Cannon modified with a wild body kit, headlights which look as though they came from the Tank 500 and dramatically lowered suspension.

There were also a few different takes on the Cannon, each one called King Kong and with a particular speciality: e.g. for natural disaster rescues, or ‘Advancing Agriculture’.

Roewe

The Clever Mars edition is the existing electric mini-car with its top chopped off, a green theme inside and out and some alieneque stuffed toys positioned on the passenger seat (with a small astronaut in the driver’s seat).

Shalong

Auto Guangzhou saw the debut of a new brand for Great Wall Motor. Called Shalong, its first model was revealed to be an angular electric sedan called Jijia Long (Mecha Dragon).

Songsan Motors

The Chinese retro-car specialist wowed another motor show with its latest prototype. This one, called Monterey, is an EV which looks something like a 1957 Buick Roadmaster.

Voyah

Also known as Lantu, Dongfeng’s new-ish luxury brand plans to add a production version of the Dreamer to its line-up in 2022. The 5,315 mm long prototype of this MPV is distinguished by a particularly imposing grille. Both electric and plug-in hybrid variants are said to be planned.

Wey

Guangzhou was a quiet show for the always busy-adding-models Wey brand, the main news being a modified Mocca called CyberMocca. This concept has dramatically different front and rear ends. It may be a preview of an additional SUV for the brand.

XPeng

The electric-only brand brought a prototype of its forthcoming G9 to Auto Guangzhou but didn’t disclose many details about this large, elegant SUV. It will manufactured by the company itself (the G3 had been outsourced to HaiMa Motor) at a second plant in the city of Guangzhou.
