Notably, the number of electric vehicles-related patent applications in the automotive industry was 3,894 in Q4 2023, versus 5,932 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 19% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Hyundai Motor filed the most electric vehicles patents within the automotive industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 208 electric vehicles-related patents in the quarter, compared with 234 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Kia with 206 electric vehicles patent filings, Toyota Motor (117 filings), and Porsche Automobil Holding (103 filings) in Q4 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by China with a 27% share of total patent filings

The largest share of electric vehicles related patent filings in the automotive industry in Q4 2023 was in China with 27%, followed by the US (24%) and Japan (7%). The share represented by China was 18% lower than the 46% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
